Happy Sunday!

📝 What I Wrote

In the last two editions of Sunday Wisdom, I talked mostly about learning: How to Learn Through Thrills and Pleasure and How We Often Follow The Process Without Capturing The Essence. Today I’m going to move to a different topic, and discuss an important concept from Stoicism.

Control What You Can Control. Devise a Strategy For The Rest.

If I have to point out only one lesson (from Stoicsm) that we all ought to master is the concept of Control. Preparing for your upcoming physics exam is completely in your control. But wishing friends and families to live forever is foolish as it isn’t up to you.

There are things that are in our control, and there are things that aren’t. But we often confuse between the two, and repent over spilt milk and bad physics exams. (1,410 words)

📑 I Enjoyed Reading

Why Is Joe Rogan So Popular? — I’m not the biggest Joe Rogan fan, but he does get his audience and his guests. We all can learn a thing or two from his rise. “The Joe Rogan Experience has been the No. 2 most-downloaded podcast on iTunes for two years running. Rogan’s second Netflix comedy special, Strange Times, dropped last year. His interview last fall with Elon Musk has been viewed more than 24 million times on YouTube, and his YouTube channel, PowerfulJRE, has 6 million subscribers. An indifferently received episode will tend to get somewhere around 1 million views. So many people in the content business right now are trying, and failing, to get the attention of these men, and yet somehow Joe Rogan has managed to recruit a following the size of Florida.”

The Unexpected Side Effects of the Coronavirus — Apart from health, Coronavirus can have drastic effects in finance as well—especially air travel, face masks, and commodities. “China is now one of the largest producers and consumers of a wide range of commodities, including oil, steel, copper, corn, wheat and soybean. But considering the country is now in lockdown, there isn’t a whole lot of activity going on here. When workers don’t go back to work, you have to leave the smelters and the refineries as is. Productivity suffers, output declines and supply industries are hit hard. Countries dependant on China for commodities also take a hit.”

Success & Perception — “There’s research that shows, for instance, that as we become wealthier, our measurable levels of empathy and compassion tend to decrease. Those of lower economic means, in contrast, often show a greater capacity for emotional intelligence than those of higher economic classes.”

🤔 Worth Thinking About

“You can’t skip chapters, that’s not how life works. You have to read every line, meet every character. You won’t enjoy all of it. Hell, some chapters will make you cry for weeks. You will read things you don’t want to read, you will have moments when you don’t want the pages to end. But you have to keep going. Stories keep the world evolving. Live yours, don’t miss out.”
